The Summer of Chill
Summer is here and with that there are a TON of activities to do. With the pressure of doing the latest and greatest I encourage you that it is OK to take some time and just underplan, underdo and rest, rest, rest.
In Summers past I would go here and there, filling my calendar with activities and being busy to be sure that we did not miss any of the Summer fun. While this WAS fun, it was also draining at times. Sometimes the kids did not even remember the fun that we had. In hindsight, could have definitely scaled back.
This year, I am embracing the “Summer of Chill.” I am relaxing more, saying YES to more small moments, and engaging more in home. We are watching movies, reading books, playing in the yard, enjoying stories, making memories, making simple crafts and just being us.
WE are being us in our way, and on our own time. I am loving it. And guess what?? The kids are loving it too. Today they made a cake on their own. They made popsicles and enjoyed playing with our beautiful new doggie that we adopted named Bella. They played in the backyard and had a great time. We have a lot of downtime and in addition to their Summer packets, they have been able to take time for some easy activities and hobbies.
Considering all the money we spend on energy and household expenses enjoying home is a great choice. We can still choose some great things to do outside of the home for Summer, but I encourage you to enjoy the chill moments too. It is ok, and you may be surprised…you may love it more without the run around feeling of rushing from place to place.
There are also some low cost fun things you could add to your Summer of Chill. Some examples are: Library time, park fun, easy play dates at your home or a friend’s, making food together, taking a walk, water fun, chalk, bubbles, visiting the ocean/beach, VBS,and fun free things around town. It is not that activities are to be avoided. Just avoid filling up your entire schedule running around so that there is no time to rest and enjoy the simple things. Try to have some days with nothing planned and just let it unfold.
